Who we are

Support Hospital Opioid Use Disorder Treatment (SHOUT) Texas is a program at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin in partnership with Be Well Texas at UT Health San Antonio working to increase access to substance and opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment and harm reduction during acute hospitalization in Texas.

The cornerstone of the SHOUT Texas model is built on the work of the award-winning Buprenorphine Team at Dell Seton Medical Center, the first hospital in Texas to develop an inter-professional approach to identifying patients with OUD, initiating buprenorphine therapy,

linking patients  to outpatient addiction care at discharge, and providing institutional education and stigma reduction.

SHOUT Texas is part of the Be Well Texas network and is funded by the Texas Targeted Opioid Response (TTOR) program through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to provide consultation, technical assistance, education, and thought-leadership to hospitals across the state.

What we do

SHOUT Texas is dedicated to expanding access to hospital-based treatment of substance use disorders as part of routine, standard care delivery. We believe that every hospital and hospital care team member can make a difference in the lives of patients with substance use disorders with or without specialized training.

SHOUT Texas offers FREE resources, consultation, and subject matter expertise to hospitals, providers, and administrators across Texas to implement substance use treatment models in their practice settings. SHOUT Texas has developed a detailed curriculum to assist Texas hospitals in navigating the substance use disorder landscape and building capacity to address SUD during hospitalization.

Why Our Work is Important

Hospitalization is a reachable moment and an important opportunity to increase access to substance use disorder management, treatment, and harm reduction. Establishing infrastructure to assist inpatients who are beginning or continuing their journey to recovery improves morbidity and mortality, and reduces readmissions, total cost of care, and provider burnout. Complications from drug use can lead to complex and prolonged hospitalizations and inpatient acute care environments are uniquely and well-positioned to help patients with substance use disorders as part of these hospital stays.
